Jerash

Overview

Jerash preserves an unusually complete Roman provincial city, with its colonnaded streets, theatres, and temples largely intact. Because it sits close to Amman, it is most often visited as a half-day or full-day excursion rather than an overnight stay, sometimes combined with nearby Ajloun on the same trip.

Main attractions

Hadrian's Arch

A monumental arch built to mark the visit of Emperor Hadrian, near the site's southern entrance.

The Oval Plaza

A large, uniquely oval-shaped forum surrounded by columns, one of the site's most photographed spaces.

The Cardo (colonnaded street)

The city's main columned street, running the length of the site and still bearing visible chariot-wheel grooves.

Temple of Artemis

A large temple complex dedicated to the city's patron goddess, with towering surviving columns.

South Theatre

A well-preserved Roman theatre with strong acoustics, still occasionally used for performances.

Getting there: Jerash is roughly a 45-minute drive north of Amman by taxi, private transfer, or organized tour, making it a straightforward day trip.
Getting around: The archaeological site itself is explored on foot along paved and stone paths.
Suggested duration: Two to three hours is generally enough to see the main monuments, making Jerash well suited to a half-day trip from Amman.
Seasonal guidance: The site is largely open and sun-exposed, so spring and autumn generally offer more comfortable walking conditions than midsummer.
Family travel: Paved paths and open plazas make much of Jerash manageable for families, though some areas involve uneven stone surfaces.
Accessibility: Main plazas and the Cardo are relatively level, while some monuments require stairs or uneven ground. Contact the tourism team before travel to confirm current options.
